What Unicode Nepali typing means
Unicode Nepali typing means writing each Devanagari letter, vowel sign and mark as its own standard code point, so क is क everywhere a Devanagari font is available. Unicode is the character standard behind almost every modern computer system, and this page produces Unicode Devanagari.
The legacy alternative
Before Unicode was widely supported, Nepali was typed with fonts such as Preeti that reused the Latin code points. Pressing the “k” key drew a Nepali glyph, but the file still contained the letter k. The text looked right on a machine with that font installed and turned into gibberish without it. See also the Preeti to Unicode converter and Unicode to Preeti .
Practical differences
Unicode text can be searched, spell-checked, sorted, copied between applications and read by screen readers. Legacy-font text generally cannot be searched for Nepali words, because the underlying characters are Latin ones. This is the main reason new content is written in Unicode. Where Unicode works
Modern Windows, macOS, Android and iOS versions ship with a Devanagari font, and the major web browsers and office suites handle Devanagari correctly. Very old software, some point-of-sale systems and a few government forms still expect legacy fonts, so keep a conversion tool handy if you work with those. See also the on-screen keyboard .
Mixed text is normal
A Unicode document can freely mix Nepali and English on the same line. That is why Romanized input plus a converter fits real writing so well: the Nepali parts become Devanagari while the English parts stay exactly as typed.
Questions people ask
What is Nepali Unicode?
It is Nepali written in the Unicode character standard, where every Devanagari letter has its own code point. Text stored this way can be read, searched and copied on virtually any modern device.
Is Unicode the same as Preeti?
No. Preeti is a legacy font that stores Nepali glyphs in Latin code points. The two are not interchangeable without conversion, which is what the Preeti ⇄ Unicode pages here are for.
