What a Nepali typeshala is

A Nepali typeshala is a typing test and practice room for the Nepali language. This free online Nepali typeshala shows a run of words, marks each character as you type it, and reports your words per minute, accuracy and consistency when the test ends. You can practise the Romanized layout, the Traditional layout or plain English, and every result stays in your browser. See also the typing tool on the home page .

Romanized or Traditional layout?

The Romanized layout maps each English key to a Devanagari character, so क is k, ा is a and ी is I, the same conventions the typing tool uses. The Traditional layout follows a typewriter-style chart, closer to the Preeti keyboards many people learned on. Start with Romanized if you type Nepali in English letters; choose Traditional if exams or office work expect that layout. See also the virtual keyboard .

How WPM and accuracy are counted

Words per minute uses the standard rule of five characters to one word, so a net score of 40 WPM means about two hundred correct characters a minute. The test compares what you type with the target by Unicode code point, so a matra, the halant and the parts of a conjunct such as क्ष are each scored. Accuracy is correct characters divided by every character you typed; consistency measures how steady your pace was.

Tips for improving your speed

Accuracy first, speed second: a clean run at a steady pace beats a fast, error-strewn one. Keep your eyes on the words rather than the on-screen keyboard, use the next-key hint until the layout is in your fingers, and practise short sessions often. An online typeshala is most useful when you return to it daily and try to beat your personal best by a few words per minute. See also Roman to Nepali typing .

Practise English as well as Nepali

Switch the language to English to warm up on familiar words before a Nepali session, or simply to measure your English typing speed on the same screen. English words are scored exactly the same way, so the accuracy and consistency numbers are comparable with the Nepali runs.

Questions people ask

What is a Nepali typeshala?

A typeshala is a typing test and practice room: the word is used for the typing schools where people learn to type Nepali. This page is a free online Nepali typeshala: it shows words to type, scores every character and reports your speed and accuracy at the end.

Is this online typeshala free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no payment and no usage limit, and nothing you type is sent to a server. It is a free online typeshala that runs entirely in your browser.

Should I use the Romanized or the Traditional layout?

Use the Romanized layout if you already type Nepali in English letters, because each key follows the same rules as the typing tool. Choose the Traditional layout if you learned on a Preeti-style keyboard or need it for an exam or office. You can switch at any time and both are scored the same way.

How is WPM calculated on this typeshala?

Net words per minute counts your correct characters and divides by five, because five characters make a standard word. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong, and accuracy is correct characters divided by all typed characters. The timer starts on your first keystroke.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practise a little every day and aim for accuracy before speed: mistakes cost more time than they save. Keep your fingers on the home row, glance at the next-key hint rather than the whole keyboard, and use the difficulty levels to move from common words to sentences with conjuncts.
